Project Scenario

Azani is a Kenyan Internet Service Provider that supplies internet packages to homes and small businesses. The company needs a database system that can manage customers, internet packages, subscriptions, payments, technicians and service requests. KNEC requires KCSE 2026 Computer Studies candidates to design and build that system.

Milestone 1 — Design (What KNEC expects)

• Cover page, declaration and acknowledgement
• Project title, problem statement and objectives
• Scope and limitations
• Feasibility study (technical, economic, operational)
• System requirements (hardware & software)
• Fact-finding methods used (interviews, observation, questionnaires)
• Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) showing all 6 entities and relationships
• Normalisation up to 3NF with justification
• Database schema (tables, fields, data types, keys)
• Input & output design sketches
• Gantt chart / project schedule

Milestone 2 — Implementation (What KNEC expects)

• Database created in Microsoft Access (or approved DBMS)
• All 6 tables created with correct data types, primary & foreign keys
• Relationships enforced with referential integrity
• At least 10 sample records per table
• Input forms for every table (Customer Registration, New Subscription, Payment, Service Request, etc.) with validation
• Queries: active subscriptions, monthly revenue, unpaid customers, technician workload, expiring subscriptions
• Reports: customer list per county, monthly payments report, service request summary, package popularity
• Switchboard / main menu navigation
• Macros & basic security (password-protected database)
• User manual with screenshots
• Testing & debugging documentation

KNEC Marking Scheme Breakdown

• Milestone 1 (Design): 40 marks
• Milestone 2 (Implementation): 60 marks
• Quality of ERD, normalisation and schema carry the highest weight in Milestone 1
• Working forms, queries and reports carry the highest weight in Milestone 2
• Documentation, user manual and presentation also score
